LATEST UPDATE: Great news! Canada Dayyc 2013 will take place in
downtown Calgary on Monday, July 1st. This will be an opportunity for
Calgarians and our regional neighbours to unite, acknowledge and
celebrate not only each other, but also the great country in which we
live. Our City, Our Country, Our Celebration. Everybody is working hard
to deliver an event that provides a much needed break from the on-going
clean-up efforts, and that is appropriate, responsive and sensitive to
the situation currently impacting our city and other affected areas. Be
sure to check the organizations websites (listen below) to joining us
on the 1st to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information and
schedule of events. Decisions are still being made and slight
Celebrate Canada - Calgary Canada Day committee provides:
Canada Day Bus: Celebrations begin mid June with the Canada Day Bus
bringing entertainment and Canada Day cake to over 4500 seniors in
about 40 seniors’ residences, care centres and retirement communities.
Calgary Fiddler volunteers entertain the seniors with a sing-a-long and
musical entertainment. Canadian hand flags, pins and birthday cake are
shared by the seniors ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to
celebrate our country's birthday!
Canada Day Breakfast: With sponsorship support by Associated Cab a
Canada Day Breakfast is hosted annually for over 200 Calgary seniors
guests selected by eight seniors organizations representing the
diversity of Calgary. The guests are served a wonderful breakfast to
start the day, entertained by groups from the Calgary Folk Arts
Council, Calgary Fiddlers and the Calgary Music Makers Seniors’ Choir
with the grand finale being the singing of Happy Birthday and the
serving of Canada Day birthday cake. Associated Cab offers to transport
guests with transportation needs from and returns them home. This event
is “by invitation only”.
Canada Day Baby Celebration: Initiated in 2008, the Calgary Canada Day
Committee celebrates each year the birth of babies born on Canada Day
in the three Calgary General Hospitals. The largest number of babies
born was 2009 with 116 baby births celebrated. In 2013 we prepared
seventy-five Celebration Baby Bags for “Proud New Canadians" expected
to be born in the three Calgary General Hospitals. The Celebration Baby
bags contain a blanket, baby bib, T-shirt, book, Bonnie Rink
photography discount of $75.00, all topped off with a Build a Bear
dressed for Canada Day.
Canada Day Promotion: The Calgary Canada Day Committee works with a
joint group planning Canada Day activities in the downtown Calgary
area. Celebrations take place on Fort Calgary, East Village, Olympic
Plaza, Downtown Stephan Avenue, River Front, River Walk and Prince’s
Island. Fireworks are planned from the Centre Street Bridge.
