Celebrations begin mid June with the Canada Day Bus bringing entertainment and Canada Day cake to over 6,000 seniors in about 50 seniors’ residences, care centres and retirement communities. Volunteers entertain the seniors with a sing-a-long and musical entertainment. Canada hand flags, pins and birthday cake are distributed to seniors ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to celebrate our country's birthday!
With sponsorship support a Canada Day Breakfast is offered annually to over 150 Calgary seniors representing the diversity of Calgary. The guests are served a wonderful breakfast to start the day, entertained by groups from the Calgary Folk Arts Council, Calgary Fiddlers and the Calgary Music Makers Seniors’ Choir with the grand finale being the singing of Happy Birthday and the serving of Canada Day birthday cake.
In 2009, 116 baby births were celebrated and for 2010 there are expectecd to be 110 "Proud New Canadians" born in the three Calgary General Hospitals. In 2008 the Canada Day Baby Celebration was initiated recognizing every baby born with a “Baby Bag” containing gifts and topped by a Canada Day Bear. This program wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of the Calgary Health Region.
The Calgary Committee assist in “getting the word out” with the Calgary Canada Day website, a Canada Day activities insert in the Calgary Herald, a flyer to provide a heads up for community associations to post in their newsletters. An important project is the distribution to groups, organizations, and towns Canada Day fun materials such as Canadian paper flags, pins, tattoos, bookmarks, and posters to assist in their celebrations. The tattoos are the favorite with children and adults alike.
